Overview:
Global smartphone shipments declined 9% YoY and 10% QoQ in Q2 2022 to 295 million units. This was the first quarter where shipments dropped below 300 million units since Q2 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic started. China’s smartphone shipments fell 14% QoQ and 18% YoY in Q2 2022 to reach 63.47 million units. China’s market share dropped to 21.5% in Q2 2022 from 23.92% in Q2 2021. Although the 618 shopping festival in June provided some boost, the market continued its decline due to disruptions caused by lockdowns, which hurt OEMs and consumer sentiment. LATAM was the only region with annual and quarterly growth in Q2 2022. LATAM’s smartphone shipments grew 10% both YoY and QoQ to reach 34.10 million units, led by Brazil, Mexico and Colombia where the shipments grew 10%, 8% and 27% YoY, respectively. The European market remained riddled with economic problems. The Russia-Ukraine war hurt the market and sharply increased the cost of living, thus resulting in reduced consumer demand. Smartphone shipments declined 20% QoQ and 18% YoY in Q2 2022 to reach 37 million units.
